Q: How do I remove the grills from the speakers?

A: Hold speaker in front of you with grill facing forward, rotate locking toggles in the back counter clockwise to disengage, and pull them forward. grill will pop out. Be sure to reset the toggles before attempting to install the speaker in the ceiling or wall.

Q: How do I control the volume independently for indoor vs. outdoor or different rooms?

A: Purchase Home Tech speaker selector. Home Tech speaker selectors are useful when you want to connect more than two pair of speakers to a typical stereo receiver or amplifier, or when you want “on/off” speaker control from a single location. The HTS4 and HTS6 are designed to connect up to four and six pairs of speakers respectively to one receiver or amplifier. These systems provide impedance protection whenever the protection circuit is manually engaged, so they adjust the impedance load to help protect your receiver.

Q: Can I run my speaker wire along or near electrical lines?

A: No. This will cause interference and distortion. If you need to cross electrical lines, do so in a perpendicular fashion.

Q: How do I determine which speakers I should purchase to match the wattage capacity of my existing audio equipment?

A: First, determine the wattage of your receiver or amplifier. The speakers you purchase should always have a wattage handling capacity equal to or greater than the wattage rating of your amp or receiver.

Q: Why are there four different conductor wires in my speaker cable? What is each used for?

A: There are four different conductor wires to accommodate two speakers (one pair) with each run of cable. When connecting wires always use the red and white wires for the positive (+) connections and the black and green wires for the (-) connections as shown below.

Left Speaker Positive (+L) = White wire
Left Speaker Negative (-L) = Green wire
Right Speaker Positive (+R) = Red wire
Right Speaker Negative (-R) = Black wire

A: No. We recommend contacting a qualified local low voltage contractor such as a custom audio installer or security system installer.

Q: What kind of speaker should I purchase for different size rooms?

A: One key gauge is the woofer size. Generally the larger the woofer, the bigger the bass output of your speaker. Therefore, use a larger speaker for a larger room.

Q: Can I mount rectangular speakers in my ceiling or round speakers in my wall?

A: For most purposes, the round speakers are designed for use in ceiling installation as they dispurse sound in a conical fashion, whereas rectangular speakers are designed for installation in-wall as they dispurse sound in a linear fashion. While all speakers will function in either wall or ceiling, using them as they are designed will maximize performance and aesthetic appeal.

Q: What type of wire should I purchase and use to install my speakers?

A: Take a look at the chart below. As a general rule, you shoud never run cable longer than 10% of the speaker impedance. For example, when using 18-gauge wire, the maximum length run to a pair of eight ohm speakers should be 50 feet. To wire a pair of eight ohm speakers that are 200 feet away, we recommend using 12 gauge wire. Smaller gauge wire will work but performance can suffer.


Q: Can I control more than one pair of speakers with a single HTVC150 wall mount volume control?

A: No, the volume control is designed to control the volume of one pair of speakers. If you wish to control volume on multiple pairs of speakers, this can be accomplished by purchasing an HTS4 or HTS6 speaker selector or multiple volume controls.

Q: What end of the wall mount volume control represents “in” vs. “out”?

A: This is denoted in white ink on the green PC board of the volume control.

Q: What is the size of the holes that need to be cut to install various speakers?

A: Each set of speakers comes packaged with a set of cut out templates to be used in cutting the holes in which to mount the speakers. The chart below also explains the dimensions of the hole to be cut out for each speaker model:

Q: What are the rules for spacing the speakers apart?

A: Please refer to your owners manual.

Q: Will my in-wall volume control fit in a standard pre-installed j-box?

A: Possibly, depending on the make and manufacturer of the j-box. In some cases, the back of the j-box may have to be removed to accommodate the depth of the volume control.

Q: Why does the in-wall volume control in one room affect the volume level in the other room?

A: When volume controls are used on the "A" output and the "B" output of a stereo receiver; if the volume control in one room affects the other room's volume, then the receiver is not capable of driving both rooms at the same time and you should upgrade the system with an HTS4 or HTS6 speaker selector.
